old technology can make art

I went home the weekend before our performance art pieces and I realized all of the money I wasted on over 6 broken cameras, 2 broken iPods, 4 cell phones, and other technological items. Considering my parents and brother all work with computers, I was raised around technology and have been obsessed with the newest gadgets since.

So my performance was to prove that even if people view these old gadgets as worthless... you can still turn it into art. I took a Jackson Pollock approach, and did a splatter painting. But with one catch, I used neon paint and blacklights for a more psychedelic affect.

I had SOO much fun just making a mess and using the gadgets to transform a black sheet into a beautiful art piece. I also loved that Santiago showed me that the actual art piece was the gadgets covered in paint on the white tarps I put down. Everyone in the class did a great job and it was a fun day of performances!!

crazy leigh and alien klaus

I haven't written on my blog in a while, but I still want to talk about these two performance artists who have stuck in my brain. Leigh Bowery and Klaus Nomi. Both were so talented and both were led to death so quickly.

Leigh Bowery was a constant performer. He could just walk down the street in one of his crazy costumes and stun the world. His creative take on fashion has influenced many, including Boy George. I was so intrigued by Leigh and could not keep my eyes off of his new costume designs, no matter how out of control and crazy they were.

Klaus Nomi....just wow. Did you hear that voice? Klaus had extraordinary talent and stunned his audiences. His crazy songs and alien-like appearances were unique. I loved his crazy outfits and the faces he made in photos, he was just a great performer all around.

thursday bloody thursday

So I will be the first one to admit that I was squeamish the entire class on Thursday. It is one thing seeing someone fall and get cut, but intentionally cutting yourself and putting yourself through pain is unbearable to me. I think I shut my eyes more than half the class. I felt like a little baby but I honestly cannot watch stuff like that.

I could see that Orlan is a performing artist, but I have no clue how she could bear the pain of being awake and getting plastic surgery. I couldn't even watch them cut her skin. Can you honestly imagine how much pain she was in? Those bumps under her forehead are just plain old strange to me. Very very strange.

I am happy that class was over, because I really do not know if I could take another day of watching people pierce their skin and hang from it...and meanwhile i have almost ten piercings and a tattoo...I guess it is just strange watching it happen. I am such a little girl hahaha

under the sea...

This project was so much fun for me! I had a great time xeroxing parts of my body, my best friend and I were cracking up when I pressed my boobs and g-string on the xerox machine. I xeroxed different parts of my body and when I laid it all out it resembled a mermaid. When I first heard of this project, I wanted to transform myself into something, and since I have always been obsessed with Ariel, I loved the idea of the mermaid.
I also xeroxed objects that were very important to me; my Blackberry<3, camera, Ray Ban Aviators, fake IDs, my religious good luck bracelet. I also used my car keys as my hair because it is wild and eccentric like me!! I used seashells as my bra to look more like a mermaid as well.
I tried my hardest to make this a different and artistic art piece..hope you guys liked it...Comment please :)
